Dear Families,

As I found I had to email to send notice about new information here, I began emailing only.
I collected so many amazing memories over the past year and only some of them have been featured!
So now here is a new update- Please check out the photos- i am sure we will show them with popcorn to the kids this week! It will be sure to delight.
Why not scroll through again with their families!!
As you can see, there is much activity and learning going on. It's  a  pleasure getting to know your special people!

Please pack extra clothes for Thursday- Friday we will have a water activity and get really messy.

I ask you to pack them Thursday as Friday I hope they can bring in a small volume (1 cup or 2 if you can spare/they can carry ;) ) of a baking ingredient.
We will study volume and make a surprise.
It can be anything you have that we can measure! NO NUTS, as always!
My list represents a diversity in texture too- as we will be comparing textures.

-corn/ beans
-corn kernels
-flour
-sugar
-salt
-rice
-cornmeal
-seeds
-oats

We will avoid cereals as they dissolve quickly in liquid.
We are investigating volume.

(This is how I learned to measure soft butter. 1 cup of water, add spoonfuls of butter, stop when the water level reaches 1 3/4 cup then you know you have 3/4 cup of butter. please do not send butter. :) We will use dry goods ;)

Stay cool this week :)

Our activities include- French Bananagrams/scrabble challenges! First in our home class then grades from 1-4 go head-to-head!
We will decorate our class and look at the flags of certain countries where French is spoken!

TUESDAY! Today is our French film- TINTIN!  Might make for interesting dinner conversation!

WEDNESDAY! Tomorrow is SWIMMING! J  and   “Le jour de mille Mercis!!” where we will all be extremely polite and over-the –top with our French words of kindness. More practice with our spelling challenge words!

THURSDAY we will be able to dress in the colours of a flag from one of the countries we have studied!
We will have an assembly to support our super spellers and to show off our costumes!

THURSDAY they can arrive with Flag-colour face-painting if they want or wait until class! (I know our class will have fun with that- Please  let me know if your child should not for allergy reasons!!)

Wednesday 9 March 2016

Dear Parents,

Unfortunately, due to pool repairs, we did not go swimming today.
Students instead had extended outdoor activity with co-operative games and free time outdoors to develop socially and physically. All the students enjoyed celebrating what feels like Spring compared to the snowstorm just 1 week ago!
We are learning to interact with each other socially in French and are encouraged to do so at all times.

Students have been visiting the book fair all week- It will continue until Friday morning!
Thanks to everyone for their support.

In the past two weeks we have studied geometry with 2D shapes and the words/concepts such as:
un polygone ( ploygon) - Straight lines, closed shape.
un quadrilatère (Quadrilateral) -  a polygon with 4 sides

We have now moved on to 3D shapes and will continue with these when we return from March break.

Here is some vocabulary:

2D
Un carrée
Un losange (in French, un diamant is only used for sparkly jewels, not for geometry!)
Un rectangle
Un triangle
Un trapèze
Un cercle

3 D
Un pyramide
Un prisme rectangulaire
Un prisme triangulaire
Un sphère
Un cube

In French we have studied  the sound EU and two new songs which will come home in the Cahier Maison-Ecole.
Great Job to all those who did their homework!!
Our policy is no homework over March Break, therefore no additional work will be given!
The duo-tang will still go home as will the books to read from as usual.

Have a great March Break!
 Kind regards,

Mme Hulsman

SWIMMING WEDNESDAY! :)

Dear Parents,

We will be swimming this Wednesday! If you are able to come as a volunteer, please call the school and  leave a message to confirm.

I saw a class today had to cancel as not enough volunteers were present. I am  not able to take the class without another adult, so we all really appreciate and value our wonderful volunteers.

I will send home a sheet tomorrow with upcoming swim days and hopefully we can have a sign up sheet started! I will post it here as updated!

In class we begin geometry!
We will play with clay this week and make shapes!

We will sort shapes and draw shapes!

We will watch a video about traditions and nature!

And this week, by popular demand- we have weekly homework!! 1 math and 1 writing assignment per week!
As well as daily reading this shall be French Fun for the whole family!

Looking forward to the week!

Hi All!

A friendly reminder that Tomorrow we will have a short assembly in the Gym to celebrate Chinese New Year.

You are welcome to attend. Seating may be limited. It begins at 12:30.

Happy Chinese New Year!

Happy Valentine's Day! Happy 100th Day of School!

Dear All,

Our class has been looking forward to the 100th day we've been at school this year!

This day falls on Thursday February 11th, which incidentally also happens to be the last school day before Valentines' day.

We will have a festive afternoon and the students have asked if they can wear pyjamas this day - which they can! (Weather appropriate please!)

Indoor shoes a must!

Snacks- ok but not obligatory!
I will make popcorn.
Students can bring nut-free snacks, and all snacks containing dairy must be labeled due to an allergy.
If students bring their own plate and water bottle, the environment will be happy.

We will organize snack tables with 100 snacks on each.
We will read 100 books aloud that day.
We will draw portraits of what we will look like at 100 years old :)
We will trace 100 fingers and make posters!

Many fun things that day!

Including....

Valentines!
Welcome, but not obligatory!

Best practice is - If you are going to make cards for some, please make them for the whole class.

Dear Parents,

I have successfully recovered my blog address!

My apologies for this technical issue.

From last week into this week
We had an initial exposure to Mme.’s secret stock of toy instruments. We made a round robin with songs from the first terms. This week students can use the instruments to jazz up their spoken word presentations. Repetition of familiar poems and songs helps develop the structure of the language. Try this at home :)

In class we can already see how the instrument takes the focus off the pressure of speaking so students can enjoy the fun of making music and song.

We had a rhyme jigsaw activity as a precursor to building songs as a group.
So many students know really great rhyming words that we may make a list for fun at-home games of "what ryhmes with..?".

Mme. learned a wonderful new goodbye song at the Conservatory and translated it for our class.

Partons en paix
Partons en paix
Que l’amour des tes amis t’entour
Tout partout
Tout partout
Tu y va.

It’s lovely.
I hope your child will share it with you.
My class at the Conservatory always insists we sing the French version now J

Both grades have been working with 2 dimensional shapes in art. We begin our geometry and spatial reasoning unit with investigating shapes and positional language (under, over, beside, in front of…etc.)

Coming soon! Mme. is working on a carpet size game of Tetris for a fun whole-class experience!

 Have a great week everyone!

Mme. Hulsman

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Our first swim day will not be until next day 2, Monday February 8th.

I need to still collect all permission forms.

Anyone who has expressed interest in volunteering can discuss the details with me this week, I will be calling this week to find times to meet.

A police check will be required; the process must be started before you can accompany the class.

Please
Bring a $15 money order (payable to Toronto Police Services) to the office and there you can fill out the volunteer form. The office will submit both for you.

Kind regards,

Mme. Hulsman
